Equipped with good low light performance and fast image capture times, the Canon A560 is a great camera for photographing babies and freezing action.

My Best In Class Pick
Canon PowerShot A560

Both cameras have Auto Modes and lots of Scene Modes for novice users. The Fujifilm F20 has almost a 50% larger sensor size (Sensor Type 1/1.7”) than other 6-7 megapixel cameras in its class (e.g. Canon A560 and Panasonic LZ7 with Sensor Type 1/2.5”). With the F20, Fujifilm has also resisted the temptation to cram more and more pixels onto such tiny sensors, which limits the noise (graininess) at high ISO settings. The camera has class-leading high ISO performance and low shutter lag times for freezing those short-lived expressions of the kids. The camera rivals the resolution of a 7 megapixel cameras because of it sharp lens and Super-CCD Sensor.

However Canon A560 has longer battery life, larger zoom and has an optical viewfinder for real-time tracking of moving subjects (action photography). Its continuous shooting performance is superior and high ISO performance is good (useful for photographing babies). The Canon A560 is our Top Pick.

Fujifilm FinePix F20

Fujifilm’s cameras are widely considered to be best low light performers because of their Super-CCD technology. Sensors with this technology have octagonal shaped pixels, which utilize the space better and have better linear/vertical resolution when compared with conventional CCD sensors with the same number of total pixels. One of the best compact cameras with Super-CCD technology is the Fujifilm FinePix F20. It has a 6 megapixel resolution sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-108mm on a 35mm camera). It has a start-up time of 1.6 seconds and a pre-focus shutter lag of 0.02 seconds. The full-press shutter lag is 0.60 seconds (0.3 seconds in high speed mode). Shot-to-shot speed is expeceted to be 1.6 sec. In continuous mode it can take 0.6 pictures/sec till memory card fills up. In burst mode it can takes 3 pictures at a speed of 2.3 pictures/sec. The camera offers one of the best High ISO performance among compact cameras. The lens is sharp. It also has a Natural Light Mode and Picture Stabilization feature, where the camera boosts the ISO setting and uses a faster shutter speed to minimize the blur caused by fast-moving subjects or camera shake. The battery life is approximately 300 shots/charge.

This camera received high praises from Steve’s Digicams (a popular camera review site).
