Expert Recommendation
.Overview
Equipped with Super-CCD technology, and class-leading low-light performance, the Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd is a great camera for family, kids, sports, and travel photography.
My Best In Class Pick
Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd
Overall the Fujifilm S6000fd scores higher than the Panasonic DMC-FZ8 because of its overall superior image quality and wider angle lens (useful for family, landscapes, and building photos). It has about a 50% larger sensor size (Sensor Type 1/1.7”) than other 6-7 megapixel cameras in its class (e.g. Panasoic DMC-FZ8 and Sony DSC-H5 with Sensor Type 1/2.5”). With this model, Fujifilm has also resisted the temptation to cram more and more pixels onto such tiny sensors. This limits the noise (graininess) at high ISO settings. The sharp lens captures minute details. The Fujifilm S6000fd actually rivals the resolution of 7 megapixels cameras because of its sharp lens and Super-CCD Sensor. It uses AA Batteries and has a good battery life (Alkaline AA Batteries, which are cheap and available off the shelf can be used in a bind), so you spend more time taking photos than charging the batteries. The camera has the class-leading high ISO performance and has good speed for freezing those action moments.
The Fujifilm S6000fd is our Top Pick. However if a significant portion of your portfolio consists of action shots & bird photos, then the Panasonic DMC-FZ8 is the better choice for its larger reach, good continuous shooting performance, and image-stabilized lens.

In the Continuous Shooting Mode, the camera can take 2.1 pictures/second until the memory card fills up. It has an Intelligent ISO Mode (auto-boosting the ISO to freeze action) and full manual control options (e.g. Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Raw Mode, etc.) for additional versatility. The camera has an Image Stabilization feature to help avoid blurry pictures because of camera shake. The life of the proprietary batteries is approximately 380shots/charge.
