Expert Recommendation
.Overview
Equipped with an image-stabilized 6x zoom lens, great image quality, good low-light performance and 10 megapixel resolution in a compact & sturdy body, the Canon G7 IS is a versatile camera for babies and travel photography. Its optical viewfinder and fast response times help in real-time tracking of fast-moving babies, children, and pets, so you can capture those short-lived expressions at the precise moment. The camera also has Auto Mode and lots of other Scene Modes for novice users.
My Best In Class Pick
Canon PowerShot G7
Both cameras have good image quality at high ISO settings and offer an Auto Mode plus a lot of scene modes for novice users. Experienced photographers will find the Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority manual modes useful. They are also both very responsive and have optical viewfinders. All these features are desirable for photographing babies. The 6x zoom and image stabilization features are helpful when traveling as it’s difficult to carry a tripod.
Overall the Canon G7 is preferable over the Canon A710 IS because of its higher resolution (effectively providing a large digital zoom), face-detection feature (helpful for properly setting the exposure to capture a baby’s face), better build (metal body) and dedicated ISO dial (helpful in changing ISO setting quickly). The Canon G7 is our Top Pick.

Canon PowerShot A710 IS
The A710 IS (along with the G7) is the compact camera with the largest optical zoom in the Canon lineup. The camera has a 7 megapixel resolution sensor, 6x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 35-210mm on a 35mm camera), and good high ISO performance. It also has an optical viewfinder and runs on two AA Batteries. It has a start-up time of 1.4 seconds and a pre-focus shutter lag (half-press to full-press of shutter button) of 0.05 seconds. The full-press shutter lag is 0.50 seconds. The shot-to-shot speed is 2.2 seconds (without a flash). It has full manual controls (e.g. aperture priority, shutter priority, etc.) for additional versatility. The battery life is approximately 360 shots/charge (900 shots with the LCD off). It supports wide-angle and tele-photo conversion lenses, which are available separately as accessories. It also has an Image Stabilization feature to help avoid blurry pictures because of camera shake.
The camera received a Highly Recommended rating at Digital Photography Review. It is also one of the favorite cameras at Digital Camera Resource Page (another popular camera review site).
