If you’re not concerned with the camera’s compact size, the Canon Powershot S5 IS is a superb choice for wildlife photography. It has a ton of great features which make this camera a veritable Swiss Army knife for photography. This camera really can do it all. And at a price of $349.99 it’s a great choice for anyone who wants a digital camera with excellent features but doesn’t want to make the leap to a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex).
My Best In Class Pick
Canon PowerShot S5 IS
The Canon S5 IS has an excellent 12X optical zoom (35mm film equivalent: 36-432mm) so it can really bring that subject in when you want a close-up shot. This is one of the camera industry’s best Image Stabilizers and has an ISO rating of up to 1600. It also has an excellent macro setting for those “extreme close-ups”, allowing you to be within 3.9 inches of your subject. This comes in very handy when you want to capture the delicate yet vibrant colors of flowers or very minuscule insect life with perfect clarity.
This camera also has excellent setting for action photography with a shutter speed of up too 1/3200ths of a second, and a continuous shooting mode of 1.5 frames per second. The S5 IS also has an excellent auto focus that does it’s job and focuses the camera very quickly. All of this will give you the tools to capture those fantastic, but sometimes fleeting wildlife moments before they’re out of sight!
The S5 IS has some of the same functions as it’s DSLR equivalent, and it gives you the controls to really get some great shots. It has Aperture and Shutter Speed control so that you can hand-set them for difficult shots. And it also has several different focusing modes to make picture taking just a little bit easier.
- +12X Optical Zoom with Optical Image Stabilization
- +Macro Mode
- +1.5 frames per second -a fast auto focus.
