Overview

Packing a high quality big 10.7x zoom with wide-angle lens in a sturdy body, the 9 Megapixel Fujifilm S9100 captures panoramic views of landscapes and closer views of the mountains.

My Best In Class Pick
Fujifilm FinePix S9100

Both cameras have sharp wide-angle zoom lenses with minimal image distortion at the extreme ends of the zoom. Both have an auto mode and lots of scene Modes so it’s easy for novice users to operate. Fujifilm also has manual controls (aperture and shutter priority modes) for experienced users.

The Panasonic DMC-TZ3 scores well because of its image stabilization feature and small form-factor, while not compromising on the quality of its big 10x zoom. It simply is more convenient to have this small camera with you while traveling as it can easily fit in a belt-pouch/coat-pocket. The image quality is also good at low ISO settings (up to ISO 400).

However the Fujifilm S9100 scores higher in resolution, versatility (manual modes), flip-down LCD (good for street and flower photography), use of AA Batteries and better image quality at higher ISOs (more so with the option of using the Raw Mode). Its eye-level viewfinder helps maintain a stable shooting posture, compensating somewhat for the lack of an image stabilization feature.

The Fujifilm S9100 is my Top Pick.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

The Lumix DMC-TZ3 is the latest big zoom compact (1.5” thick) from Panasonic. This camera has a 7 megapixel resolution sensor and a 10x optical zoom with wide-angle lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm camera). The lens is sharp, and the zoom is motor operated. It has a start-up time of 2.5 seconds and a full-press shutter lag of 0.5 seconds. The camera has an Image Stabilization feature to help avoid blurry pictures because of camera shake. The feature is akin to shooting with a cheap tripod. In low light, it helps to shoot using a relatively low ISO setting. At higher ISO ratings, the camera can shoot with less light, but there will more noise in the image. The life of its proprietary battery is approximately 270 shots/charge.

The camera received a “Recommended” rating at Digital Photography Review.
