Overview

Equipped with an 8 megapixel resolution sensor, low shutter lag times, and long battery life, the Canon A630 is a good camera for photographing babies and kids indoors and outdoors. Its swivel LCD is helpful for taking overhead shots at crowded places, street photography and taking photos of toddlers. For novice users the A630 offers an Auto mode and lot of Scene modes, while experienced users will like its manual mode options.

My Best In Class Pick
Canon PowerShot A630

All the above cameras have an Auto Mode and lots of other Scene Modes for novice users.

The Canon A560 has better battery life than the Fujifilm F20 and has an optical viewfinder for real-time tracking of moving subjects. The Fujifilm F20 has about a 50% larger sensor size (Sensor Type 1/1.7”) than other 6-7 megapixel cameras in its class (e.g. Canon A560 with Sensor Type 1/2.5”). With the F20, Fujifilm has also resisted the temptation to cram more and more pixels onto such tiny sensors. This limits the noise (graininess) at high ISO settings. The camera has class-leading high ISO performance and good speed for freezing those short-lived expressions of the kids. The sharp lens captures minute details. The camera rivals the resolution of 7 megapixel cameras because of its sharp lens and Super-CCD Sensor. The Fujifilm scores over the Canon A560 because of its snappy response times and class-leading high ISO performance (essential for blur-free photos of babies without flash).

Overall, the Canon A630 is the preferred choice because of its higher resolution, swivel LCD (for overhead shots, flower & street photography, taking photos of toddlers), and manual modes. The high ISO performance is good, and the battery life is excellent. Its optical viewfinder helps for real-time tracking the action and freezing those short-lived expressions. The Canon A630 is our Top Pick.

Fujifilm FinePix F20

Fujifilm’s cameras are widely considered to be best low light performers because of their Super-CCD technology. Sensors with this technology have octagonal shaped pixels, which utilize the space better and have better linear/vertical resolution when compared with conventional CCD sensors with the same number of total pixels.

Currently one of the best compact cameras with Super-CCD technology is the Fujifilm FinePix F20. It has a 6 megapixel resolution sensor and 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-108mm on a 35mm camera). The start-up time is 1.6 seconds and the pre-focus shutter lag (half-press to full-press of the shutter button) is 0.02 seconds. The full-press shutter lag (interval between pressing the shutter button without pre-focusing to the actual moment of capture) is 0.60 seconds (0.3 seconds in high speed mode). The lens is sharp. It also has a Natural Light Mode, picture-stabilization feature (the camera boosts the ISO to choose higher shutter speed for minimizing blur caused by a fast-moving subject or camera shake). The battery life is approximately 300 shots/charge.

This camera received high praises from Steve’s Digicams (a popular camera review site).

Canon PowerShot A560

The Canon PowerShot A560 has a 7 megapixel sensor resolution, 4x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 35-140mm on a 35mm camera), and has good high ISO performance. It has a start-up time of 1.6 seconds. The pre-focus shutter lag is less than 0.1 seconds. The full-press shutter lag is around 0.50 seconds. It has a face detection feature (when the shutter button is pressed halfway, the camera finds the faces in the frame and sets the exposure and most suitable focus point). It also has an optical viewfinder and runs on two AA Batteries. The battery life is around 500 shots/charge.

The camera received high praises from Steve’s Digicams (a popular camera review site).
