Expert Recommendation
.Overview
The new Canon A650 IS combines a full feature set including optical image stabilization, six-power zoom, full manual control (if you want it) and megapixels galore, all for a reasonable price. A great family and vacation camera for those who want a full-featured camera but not a DSLR, the A650 IS can take pictures in everything from low light situations to landscapes. The manual focus ability allows prefocusing, which lets you capture those shots where you don’t have a lot of time to waste, such as pictures of children or pets. A versatile all-around camera, the Canon A650 IS allows the shooter exactly as much control as they want, from full manual to auto mode for those who want the true ‘point and shoot’ experience.
My Best In Class Pick
Canon PowerShot A650 IS
The Canon A650 IS suggests DSLR features at a point and shoot price. The full range of controls, allowing the shooter the opportunity to experiment and grow in their skill is a wonderful addition to a point and shoot camera. Image stabilization is such a welcome addition to low-light and telephoto shots, making the percentage of ‘keepers’ that much higher. The use of manual focus allows for the quick capture of subjects. The six-power zoom range is always welcome, and the use of AA batteries means if you ever run out, the nearest store is bound to have some available. The one thing this camera doesn’t have is a wide-angle lens, it is a basic 35mm. However, using the panoramic shot mode you can take two overlapping pictures and turn them into one on your computer with the included software! This is a camera that you can use comfortably and concentrate on what you want to do, take pictures!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3
The Panasonic TZ-3 is a sharp looking compact camera with some wonderful features. Boasting a wide-angle lens and optical image stabilization, the Panasonic also offers a ten-power zoom. This combined with a large, clear LCD on the back makes it a serious competitor for those wanting to shoot in low-light situations. It does, however, use a proprietary battery.
