Bright rooms cause headaches for Plasma HDTV owners. That’s why the Samsung LN40B630 is a great investment for a mid-sized television set under a grand.
My Best In Class Pick
It happens all too often: A new HDTV is needed for the living room, so dad goes out and finds what he is told is the cream of the crop. The family sits around anxiously waiting as dad opens the box and puts together the TV. Everything is in place and with the click of a button, the new HDTV set turns on. Pairs of eyes focus on the black screen as it comes to life, only something is not right. The colors are washed out and dull, it’s difficult to see. Then the realization sets in - this TV isn’t made for a bright room.
The Samsung LN40B630 will alleviate this potential headache. With a matte screen that is superb at reducing reflections, it is the best HDTV ranging from 32” to 42” under $1,000. The TV also produces accurate colors and the black levels are dark for an LCD. You are not only getting an HDTV that will excel in bright rooms, but an HDTV with great picture.
Cleverreviews.com said ”this flat panel also incorporates a number of innovative features to reduce the motion blur and image judder, which traditionally plague LCD HDTVs when displaying fast movement”. The 4 ms response time helps reduce blurring and is the best out of the 120 hz sets, so fast-action movies and sports will be crisp and clear.
The Auto Motion Plus is another feature that adds frames to reduce juddery movements and creates a smooth picture. Each of the three HDTVs compared have this but each manufacturer gives it a different name. Some people like it, while others are more sensitive to the dejudder effect. If you have a Blu-Ray player, make sure to turn dejudder off for films. This way you can display the movie at its natural speed of 24 frames per second. If left on, it will give the film a soap opera-like feel of 30 frames per second. If you have a DVD player that uses 2:3 pull-down, you will also want dejudder turned off.
The red Touch of Color will make this HDTV a sexy choice, although some may find the color distracting.
Comparison with LG 37LH55
The light black levels and the fact that dejuddering cannot work independently of 240 Hz keep the LG 37LH55 from becoming best in class.
Comparison with Sony KDL-40V5100
The Samsung LN40B630 beats out the Sony KDL-40V5100 by featuring a matte screen, better response time and superior colors, especially with dark video.
- +4 ms response time
- +Great matte screen
- +Best colors and black levels
- -Touch of Color not for everyone

The LG 37LH55 boasts accurate color, but the lightest black levels keep it from becoming best in class. It also features a matte screen, which will greatly reduce reflections and keep sunlight from washing out the picture. The 2.4 ms response time is the best out of the three sets, while the 240 Hz refresh rate makes for less blur than the other two television sets. When the TV is set to 240 Hz, the dejudder effect is also enabled and cannot be shut off, so it’s best to change the refresh rate to 120 Hz when watching films.
Comparison with Sony KDL-40V5100
The matte screen makes the LG 37LH55 easier to see in bright rooms than the Sony KDL-40V5100, but the latter features better black levels.
- +Best response time
- +Accurate color
- +240 Hz great at reducing blur
- -Light black levels
- -240 Hz means dejudder.
The Sony KDL-40V5100 is another set that works great in brightly lit rooms. It features a non-glossy screen that, while not as good as matte, will help reduce reflections. CNET.com said the “5100’s principal add-on is with 120Hz processing, which enables improved motion resolution (aka less blurring) when you turn on the company’s MotionFlow dejudder processing”. The menu is set up well and novices will able to easily navigate through it. Color and contrast are exceptional, and darks are relatively good. However, CNET.com said dark scenes appear to have a bluish tinge.
- +Basic menu design
- +Non-glossy screen
- +Excellent color and contrast
- -Color in dark scenes seems a bit off
